Audyo File - A Concert Review.. Sort Of PDF Print E-mail

Initially, I thought I was just going to write a general review about a concert.  This concert being on Monday, February 2nd at the Orange Peel in Asheville.  The line-up consisted of MyChildren MyBride, The Human Abstract, Protest The Hero, and As I Lay Dying.  However, the more I thought about it, the more I felt that my experience was so much more than that.  So why should I stop at some stupid silly review?  Instead, my point should reflect what I learned and what I experienced at the show.

MyChildren MyBride opened and I was eager to hear this band.  I am a firm believer that solidstate is by far, one of the best record labels out there.  There's no question that anything on that label is a good investment and solid music.  The same applies for their sister label if you're interested in music that's softer than metal and hardcore.  MyChildren MyBride delivered.  Simply put.  The only band that out performed them that night was As I Lay Dying.  Awesome stage presence and flow combined with heavy hitting breakdowns gave an energy and atmosphere that eludes a lot of current bands and artists in metal today.  What struck me as even more amazing is what happened at the very end... but I'll get to that in a bit.

Now, I could say some things about the Human Abstract and Protest the Hero.  I will say that they are highly skilled players and they're good at playing technical music.  But I will leave it at that.

Now, As I Lay Dying, the main reason why I went (along with several of my friends), was top-notch.  They came with a purpose and with a fire in their hearts.  They played to and for the crowd.  They fed off the energy that was given to them and returned it back to the mass of people before them.  That's the way it should be.  I felt the same atmosphere as I did earlier with MCMB with just a bit more added force.  For what reason I could only imagine is due to familiarity and anticipation.  And even after all that AILD delivered again, however, not just in the form of a song.

Now.. what could these 2 bands have done that simply threw me back and overjoyed me at the same time?  They opened up and revealed the true purpose of their music.  They're Christians and they're there to spread the word of God, worship him, and to show their lost brothers and sisters that they're no different from them in terms of emotions, appearance, heartache, and anger.  They're there to show the truth of the eternal and the right path.  Granted, after MCMB, proclaimed that Jesus loved everyone in the crowd, I heard some off-color remarks and snide comments.  The same went for AILD.  Despite all that, I know that's who those to bands were really trying to reach.  Those so close to darkness that they become bitter and mock those who know the truth and want to share it and God's love.

I'm glad I got to speak briefly with the lead singer of MCMB and thanked him for all he did and express my joy.  I wish I could've only done the same with AILD.  Furthermore, I wish I had the time to ask them both.. "What does it feel like to be attacked on both fronts?"  It's expected to be mocked for being a Christian by the the types of crowds you play for when you're a hardcore or metal band.  But even on the home front, you suffer all the criticism for listening and playing the "devil's music".  However, I know these bands probably have their support with their families, friends, and home churches.  Alas, I know for a fact that there's many groups of Christians that believe heavy metal is a work of the devil, despite that's probably the best way to reach the dark and troubled youth of our nation!  Music is a very powerful tool.  It is the way I worship, the way I communicate, and the way I feel.

After seeing MCMB and AILD, it only reignited the fire in me to go play on stage once again.  I miss it so much.   It even starts to hurt because I know that's where I belong.  And I know I'll be there again someday, I just pray that it comes sometime soon.

To MCMB and AILD, keep doing the Good Work.  Keep inspiring those like me to maintain their focus and to show people that metal, with God as the focus, is worship.  A perfect example (granted I know it's older and not many people would ever request this song at a concern) is As I Lay Dying's "Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier".  Looking at those lyrics, there is no denying that's a song of worship.  I definitely want to see you guys in concert again soon.  Thank you for an awesome experience and unforgettable moments.
